Mobile Year in Review 2011

Is the pen mightier than the sword? Probably not, but the mobile device might be. 2011 wasn't just the year of mobile, it was the year that mobile took over the world, as they say in this video, along with some mind blowing stats. Exciting growth in 2011 and another awesome video following last years.

Got A Fresher Look, What Do YOU Think?

Yes, I know Blogger is the real cheese of platforms to use, but it does the job for me right now. A simple colour change with some cleaning-up has freshened things up nicely. The darkness and bright text needed to go, the change to a lighter reading area is the right one, in my opinion. The blog is a little wider now, the 'About' and 'Contact' pages have been updated and the navigation text is green as a little reminder of the past.

Check out Before/After and please tune me whether you like (1.) or (2.) below:

The colours since her birth in 2009.

(1.) Too light? Texture comes through better.

(2.) Current. Win. What do you think?

Red Bull: Trick Bikers Hit South Africa

French motorbike trials rider, Julien Dupont is Red Bull's, "Jozi Sessions". To be honest, the video is more scenery and posing then insane skills, but it's nice to find Red Bull's extreme sport monkeys doing their thing in South Africa. Looking forward to the Masters of Dirt at Cape Town Bike Festival!

Brian Capper, South African, Supermoto and trials bike champion recently set out to ride over the arch of Durban's, Moses Mabhida Stadium. Nuts, given the fact that his head is much higher from being on a bike, the ±350m ground cover is a narrow stretch of steps and some points are insanely steep.

Toy Run 2011 Pictures

The Toy Run, a mass gathering of bikers to raise toys for children over the festive season. Today I enjoyed my 5th ride in Cape Town, starting from Ottery, thousands of bikers rode to the festivities in Maynardville, high-five'ing bystanders alongside the road. At the end of the ride, toys are given in, beers are consumed, bikes are perved over, merchandise is bought, live music is heard and people of all kinds are generally having a good time. Dirt build up in nostrils is to be expected  :)

Ducati 1199 Panigale Superbike

The new Ducati 1199 Panigale is a whole lot of bike and the first Ducati superbike with a name; normally just numbers, such as 998, 1098, 1099. The name is pronounced "Pan-ee-gah-lee" and if you ever come up against one at a traffic light, unless you're packing, best you knock over your king and accept "Checkmate".

Beast!

A short quote from the site, "In calculating the optimum configuration to achieve the next big step forward in power output for the L-twin engine, Ducati and Ducati Corse engineers increased engine speed and enhanced breathability with the incredible bore and stroke of 112mm x 60.8mm. The intense study of power and ridability resulted in an output of 195hp @ 10,750 rpm." The new Superquadro engine is lighter and produces more power, which sounds about right for Ducati's innovative technology and Italian brains. The site is packed with content, check it out!

Brilliant! The "One Slap" ad for Omo makes me laugh every time! Not your typical 'dirty before, clean after' washing cleaner ad. I think I would have an accident in my pants if I saw my mom's domestic, "Mavis" scold her like this - "Woo ehh eh Mrs Mitchell, only white sugar in my coffee".

Dexter Season 6 - Video Trailer

I am by no means a "series junkie", but Dexter has held my attention from the very beginning to the end of season 5. Showtime's Emmy nominated drama series, starring Michael C Hall and the crew are now almost ready to present season 6. Dexter suggests to be taking a religious route this time with the tag line, "This fall he'll make you a believer". Rumor has it that the show will air in South Africa on M-NET in 2012, but I think we all know that there is an alternative. I cannot wait. Enough said. Enjoy the trailer!

Airlines Adoption of Social Media (infographic)

Although this information does not take all airlines into account, the data collected is very impressive in favour of Social Media. Some points that stood out for me in this infographic video are as follows:

  • 89% of all businesses in 2011 expect to engage in Social Media
  • Delta tweets 63.9 times a day
  • Delta was the first airline to allow ticket reservations and check-ins via Facebook
  • 40% of airlines are actively looking to expand their Social Media teams
  • Virgin America receive 96% positive opinion

For a larger view click here.
Given the stress involved around flying and the need for instant gratification, social media serves as the perfect tool for real time communication with passengers. Airlines are dedicating resources to social media in two ways, an Integrated (internal) or Dedicated (hired) model and both are effective, but it is interesting to note that more social media staff does not mean more reach. Airlines who engage and collaborate with their audience through social media are more empowered to efficiently and conveniently monitor and improve their brand reputation. In a world of terrible call centers and long queues, social media is fantastic in allowing brands to respond to mentions immediately and we all know that people like to feel they have been heard.

Meet your customers where they are!

Social Media Revolution 2011 by Erik Qualman

Erik Qualman is back again in 2011 for the next installment of the Social Media Revolution videos, based on his book Socialnomics. The song for this video is called Baba Yetu by Christopher Tin and although I like the African sound, I much prefer the Fat Boy Slim tune in his previous videos. Some facts that stood out for me in this video are as follows:

  • over 50% of the world population is under 30 years of age.
  • this year Facebook topped Google for weekly site traffic.
  • 1 in 5 couples meet online | 3 in 5 gay couples meet online.
  • 1 in 5 divorces are blamed on Facebook.
  • 50% of mobile internet traffic in the U.K is for Facebook.
  • eReaders surpassed traditional book sales.
  • social gamers buy $6 billion in virtual goods | movie goers only buy $2.5 billion in real goods.
  • if Wikipedia was a book, it would have 2.25 million pages & take 125 years to read.
  • 90% of consumers trust peer recommendations.

Social Code's Success for Southern Comfort SA

Social Code is an innovative digital agency that offers social media, mobile and development services. Southern Comfort, an alcoholic spirit was founded by Martin Wilkes Heron in 1874 and Social Code were assigned the task of introducing Southern Comfort SA to the consumers in the digital space with a fun and rewarding level of interaction. Based on key competitors in social media, the goal was set for Social Code to build a community around the Southern Comfort brand of around 6000 members in 12 months. A strategy was well thought out and the "Time to Lime" competition campaign was born. Social Code developed a fun and interactive app on Facebook that allowed users to add lime wedges to their pictures and then share them.

Southern Comfort SA
Simple and easy to share, over 926 photos are already uploaded onto Facebook every second. The mechanic simply allowed users to have a little bit of fun with the brand as an extension of that existing habit.
Participants who shared pictures were immediately entered into the competition to win weekly prizes. Southern Comfort SA leveraged their offline activity to re-enforce their digital presence, which was vital to the success of online engagement.

The results were impressive to say the least. Justin Hartman, CEO of Social Code said, "The fan page grew to almost 6,400 fans in a record time of just 3 short months and the consistent adoption rate of almost 100 fans per day was impressive in a South African context”. Matt Visser, a digital strategist who also worked on the campaign added, "What we managed to get right with the team at Social Code wasn't inventing a new mechanic or trying to be too clever, but just providing a fun, simple interaction which was essentially just a little extension to the habitual behavior of their relevant target audience. Being a part of an effective campaign is always rewarding, but it's mostly a result of having regular fresh content and the team dedication to respond to every user action, almost immediately, this is something Social Code is definitely getting good at. Real time interaction, it really helped".

Danny MacAskill in Cape Town

Believe it! Redbull pro trials bike rider Danny MacAskill uses Cape Town as his "playground" to promote the Leica V-Lux 30 Camera. He caught my attention last year with the release of the epic short film, "Way Back Home" and you can see my post about it here. It truly is an awesome sight to see him showing off his talent on local streets. Highlights from this video include: the aerial shots around the CBD, tail-whip off high ledge, the gap he jumps (without much speed) between the bridges where the Giant Vuvuzela was over the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the sunset shots near the Glen. Massive respect to the man!

3D Projection Mapping in Cape Town by Wrigley's

Wrigley's 5 Projection Cape Town from Dont Party on Vimeo.

Wrigley's brought the first ever 3D Projection Mapping experience to South Africa, both in Johannesburg and Cape Town. This is also the first user generated projection, allowing internet users to create their own projections with the chance of seeing them in real life. Based on the 5 Experience campaign for 5 Gum and incentivised with the prize of winning tickets to see french electronic DJ, Etienne De Crecy live on the 27th (Joburg) or 28th (Cape Town). Free 5 Gum samples were available and the projection lasted more than an hour. At times, I felt the projections were a bit repetitive and the crowd of people watching consisted of a massive ±100 people (i.e. not that many). Promo guys and gals were walking around with iPad's taking people's email addresses, but without a name. So they are clearly not planning to address you personally in future communications. I see in the above video from Don't Party, there was an interactive element too, but I must have missed it. About 840 projections have been created on the website and it was great to see in South Africa. I had trouble with my video's, but here are some pictures.

The Surface - Notice the 2 Massive Projectors!

Watermelon, Peppermint and Spearmint - red, blue, green
