Social Media Revolution 4 - Infographic 2012

Erik Qualman has produced his annual statistical infographic video on social media and the web.
Saw a few stats from last year, but I am very glad the Fat Boy Slim sound track has been kept.

Cannot wait for what next year has in stall for the internet:
  • 1 Billion “strong” on Facebook – 3rd largest country in the world.
  • Over 50% of the world’s population is under 30 years old.
  • Each day 20% of Google searches have never been searched before.
  • In 10 years, over 40% of the Fortune 500 will no longer exist.
  • Social Media is the number 1 activity on the web – yet Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and Google are not welcome in China.
  • “What happens in Vegas stays on Facebook, Twitter, Youtube.”
  • The Ford Explorer launch on Facebook generated more traffic than a Super Bowl ad.
  • 1 in 5 couple meet online.
  • 3 in 5 gay couples meet online.
  • 1 in 5 divorces are blamed on Facebook.
  • Kindergartens are learning on tablets, not chalkboards.
  • 69% of parents are “friends’ with their kids on Social Media.
  • 92% of children under age 2, have a digital shadow.
  • Linked – a new member joins every 2 seconds.
  • Social gamers will buy $6 billion in virtual goods in 2013 – moviegoers only 2.5 billion in real goods (scary!).
  • YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world.
  • Every minute, 72 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube.
  • If Wikipedia were a book, it would be 2.25 million pages long.
  • 97% of Pinterst fans are woman!
  • 53% of people on twitter recommend products in their tweets.
  • 90% of consumers trust peer recommendations.
  • “Socialnomics" = Word of Mouth on Digital Steroids” – Erik Qualman.
  • New Yorkers received tweets about the east coast earthquake 30 seconds before they felt it.
  • We will no longer search for products and services… they will find us via social media – 93% of markers use social media for business.
  • The ROI of social media is that your business will still exist in 5 years.
  • Word of Mouth becomes World of Mouth.
  • Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Katy Perry have more Twitter followers than the entire populations of countries like, South Africa, Germany, Argentina, Canada and Turkey.
  • Babies in Egypt have been names Facebook and Twitter (that's crazy!).

Low Flying Wingsuit Madness with Jokke Sommer

Highly worth the interview, because at 1:29 is possibly the longest, low flying wingsuit footage you've ever seen! Norwegian dare devil Jokke Sommer says, "I have accepted the part that, if I f*ck up I die". Cool sound track too, but no one seems to know who it's by.

Death Star Canteen by Eddie Izzard is a golden oldie that cracks me up every time, enjoy!

...but is this how the future of Star Wars is going to look?

Coke Zero and James Bond: Unlock The 007 In You

This is very cool, a Coke Zero vending machine offers customers the chance to partake on a short mission to receive James Bond Skyfall movie tickets. It only requests your name (for a clever reason) and then the fun begins. Don't blame me if you get the theme song stuck in your head for a little while.

The Evolution of Drums with Gino Fabbri [and me]

Gino Fabbri, South African comedian and drummer, I dig this! Remember the Evolution of Dance? It's approaching 200 million views. The Evolution of Drums brings back good memories for me... Insanely cool compilation, recorded by smartphones, apparently, with a song selection of note, nicely done! All the classic 80's tunes, even some Johnny Clegg, Nirvana and Shakira's WakaWaka. I'm not just saying this, but it is rad, right to the end. Don't know how he remembers the order or feels the timing!

The good memories? 'Did You Know'... throughout school and studies, drums were a huge part of my life. Always liked them, always will, just not playing nearly as often these days. In grade 5, I started saving for a drum kit, the income was much smaller back then, so things took a while longer for a purchase of this size. Had to be a quality drum kit from the start, to avoid wanting a better one at a later stage, musical instruments are like that. In grade 7, I bought my drum kit, Pearl Export series and it has been with me ever since. I was in a band with two of my mates, Charl and Tim, we were the punk rockers of our world :) having a GOOD laugh right now going down memory lane, good times, some things change, playing music always rocks. I managed to find some pics:

Rocking... or was I? That t-shirt definitely was!

Salta Province, northwest Argentina, the New Zealand of Argentina! 'Chicken' meter indicates tackle strength, when the green light is reached, purchased beer drops out, because it's, "better to tackle for a beer". 332 tackles in one night and a 25% increase in sales across pubs is very well done.

My Mountain Bike Story [UPDATED]

Since my early school days, I went through skateboarding, rollerblading, bodyboarding and BMX'ing stages, with wakeboarding and skiing, have been down the Orange River four times, completed the Argus three times and was brought up with camping and the outdoors since age 4 (learnt to ride a bicycle on a camping trip). From age 16, I was driving a scooter and age 17 a motorbike. All the extreme stuff excited me. Grade 7, BMX days, we went as far as leaving a pick and shovel on Signal Hill and went everyday after school to build dirt jumps, ended being an epic little figure-of-8 track.

One of my goals for this year was to be more active, i.e. get back into doing an adrenaline seeking sport. June last year, I got back into bodyboarding and am loving it, but the drive to go surf started weakening with winter. At the beginning of the year, while sitting around a fire with some mates, we decided, mountain biking would be it! I got looking for a bike as soon as we were back in town.

Clifton Trawler Time Lapse

Shot over 4 days with a Canon 5DMKII and a 24-70mm f2.8, by Rory
"There were three attempts to pull the Eihatsu Maru out, two of them failing with the rope snapping and the third being a success. The diesel on the Japanese trawler, which was also carrying fish, had to be pumped into a bladder on the beach to decrease its weight, making it easier to pull out..
The diesel was offloaded, a stronger towing point was welded to the rear of the ship and she was pulled out at high tide on Friday the 18th May 2012." Great job on the video, Rory! via
